HOLY CHILD FILAM MINISTRY IN LAS VEGAS CELEBRATES 10TH YEAR
By The Rev. Dr. Fred Vergara
In 2003, while serving as Asian Missioner of the Diocese of El Camino Real and founding priest of Holy Child Episcopal Church in San Jose, California, I crossed frontiers by starting the first Asian/ Filipino American Ministry in Las Vegas.
Once a month, my wife Angela and I would drive ten hours to Las Vegas to evangelize and gather “unchurched” Filipinos. The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori , diocesan bishop of Nevada offered us the use of All Saints Episcopal Church and its rector, Rev. Frank Bergen warmly welcomed us. Manny Sese, former Senior Warden of Holy Child in San Jose moved to Las Vegas with his wife, Doris and their children to become the coordinating family. Rev. Arsie Almodiel, was then serving as associate priest in Holy Child Family, Las Vegas, NV Delano, California.
Without funding, we grew the church IN Las Vegas, from scratch. Ten years have passed. I became church wide missioner of The Episcopal Church in 2004 and moved to New York City. Bishop Katharine became the first woman Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church in 2006. Fr. Arsie became the priest-in-charge of the Holy Child Church in Las Vegas.
On August 31, 2013 the congregation will celebrate its 10th year anniversary with a Dinner Dance at 6:30 P.M.. – 11:30 P.M. at Suncoast Hotel, 9090 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89145. Let us support this church as a demonstration of God’s unfailing love. “Where God guides, God provides. God’s work, done in God’s way and in God’s time will never lack provision.”
